The ones that get away …
Its a tough game this web publishing lark. Every now and then it is necessary to sell a few sites that aren’t keeping your attention or faltering and move on to pastures new. I always like to keep an eye on the sites that I sell as I find it interesting to see where they are taken after my ‘reign’ is over.
Many falter in pretty much the same way that they would have if I had carried on with my neglective self and make me wonder if it was even worth the buyer taking them on. But every now and then your’ll be kicked in the ass by a site that you let go knowing it had potential that you would have eventually capitalised on.
Whats the moral of this story ? Don’t sell yourself short. You may desperate for cash to pump into something else but don’t sell your potential money spinner unless you are 100% sure you can take it no further. Look out for tell tale signs that you site is worth more than that elusive 10 time monthly revenue. Lots of interest is the most obvious sign if people are jumping at the chance to offer you a BIN price think carefully and set your BIN to one that takes the potential of the site in mind again forget 10 times revenue here. Also keep in mind what content your web site offers. Is it something free that a lot of people are going to link back too ? If so then hang on and think about the potential earnings and seo kick back from page rank and natural seo traffic that may be coming your way.
One of my first sales on Sitepoint was a template site, pretty much the first of a now massive niche. The site hadn’t been updated for a few months as I hadn’t been bothered. It was started purely out of interest and I became bored with it. I threw it up for sale on sitepoint and immediatley there was an avalanche of interest. I set the BIN price and it was snapped up within seconds. Now said site is still a leader in a massive niche, PR6 because of thousands of backlinks all coming from templates designed by myself.
Definatley one that got away.
Yeah, I can imagine it would suck to see success like that for something you used to own. I have not been in the business for very long, and I have yet to sell any website. Some of the ones I’ve put a lot of hours in, I should be able to sell. But why bother? They might turn out to be even bigger sellers in no time at all.
On another note, good to see you made the switch to WP! Now you finally have a RSS feed I can subscribe to!

I think its a case of needs must. At the time the site was sitting around and not doing much so I thought I would cash in. As most do when they first create a semi-success. I guess the temptation is too much.
WP’s great ! Just need to get the design sorted and everything will be tickety boo …
